The use of clinical data from electronic medical records (EMRs) for clinical research and for evaluation of quality of care requires an extraction process. Many efforts have failed because the extracted data seemed to be unstructured, incomplete and ridden by errors. We have developed and tested a concept of extracting semi-structured EMRs (Journal III, Profdoc) data from 776 diabetes patients in a general practice clinic over a 5 year period. We used standard database management techniques commonly applied in clinical research in the pharmaceutical industry to clean up the data and make the data available for statistical analysis.

Purpose
Data mining on electronic health records (EHRs) has emerged as a promising complementary method for post-marketing drug safety surveillance. The EU-ADR project, funded by the European Commission, is developing techniques that allow mining of EHRs for adverse drug events across different countries in Europe. Since mining on all possible events was considered to unduly increase the number of spurious signals, we wanted to create a ranked list of high-priority events.

Background
Combining multiple databases with disjunctive or additional information on the same person is occurring increasingly throughout research. If unique identification numbers for these individuals are not available, probabilistic record linkage is used for the identification of matching record pairs.
